Artifact: Vision Paper
Standard 1.1: Shared Vision
The Shared Vision Paper was created for the Instructional Technology Leadership course. The purpose of the assignment was to demonstrate mastery in facilitating and implementing a shared vision. The paper includes a five sentence shared vision statement that reflects the vision of Buford Elementary, which in short is to operate at a high technology performance level and ensure that all learners, when exiting, have the skills necessary to be productive and life-long 21st Century learners. Additionally, the Shared Vision Paper examines and defines all of the stakeholders’ roles necessary in achieving the shared vision of technology. My contributions included analyzing and synthesizing observational, interview, and survey data and supporting literature like ISTE's essential condition of Student-centered Learning.
A diverse range of teachers collaborated on the shared vision of technology at Buford Elementary by making contributions to my observational data. By completing a questionnaire consisting of nineteen questions, survey respondents were able to indicate their vision of technology usage at Buford Elementary. My role was to synthesize the school profile, survey responses, and ISTE's essential conditions of Student-centered Learning into a clear trajectory for the next three to five years regarding technology at Buford Elementary. Outlined in the artifact is the role of each stakeholder group needed in achieving the vision. By collaborating with the teacher leaders of Buford Elementary, this assignment and artifact allowed me to foster and demonstrate the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to facilitate and develop a shared vision.
This assignment allowed me to not only define my vision but also the collective vision of key teachers at Buford Elementary. The exercise of clearly defining concrete scenarios and practices needed to achieve the vision was an important learning experience and crucial to my development as an Instructional Technology leader. By continuously providing the teachers of Buford Elementary with rich technology focused professional development sessions, I have effectively contributed to the implementation of the shared vision. In retrospect, my main regret was not incorporating more stakeholders’ input into the shared vision. If I would do anything differently, it would be to extend the survey to all teachers and support staff to get an even more accurate measure of the shared vision. While I did survey seventeen key teacher leaders, I feel as if a global school survey would have been a better measurement.
The work that went into developing the shared vision has positively impacted school improvement, student learning and faculty development. A prime example of one of the many ways the shared vision is being implemented is through the Buford Elementary Parent Involvement Video Tutorial Series. The shared vision calls for parents to participate in technology focused parent workshops and for teachers to seek out new technology solutions for their classrooms. At Buford Elementary we have done this by expanding the walls of the classroom through technology and extended helpful video tutorials to parents about how to help their young learners at home. My role has been to facilitate the creation of these videos by partnering with and educating my colleagues on the best practices needed to effectively document the parent workshops. Further, I have helped facilitate and implement this initiative by editing, compiling, and uploading streaming media to the Buford Elementary website on a broad range of topics taught by my colleagues. The impact of the Buford Elementary Parent Involvement Video Tutorial Series will be assessed through end of the year parent surveys. Finally, by continually working towards the ideals of the shared vision, many more positive impacts to school improvement can be achieved by all stakeholders of Buford Elementary. Annual personnel surveys and needs assessment surveys will continually assess the impact and direction of the shared vision of Buford Elementary.
