Artifact: Internet Safety Blog Post / Email Documentation / Video
Reflection:
Standard 3.7
One of the largest community events that Buford Elementary conducts is the annual Arts, Technology and Family Involvement Night that consists of musical performances, an art show, technology demonstrations, and parent involvement classes. As part of this event, a series of parent involvement classes is designed and developed to address the needs of parents. The included artifacts are a series of emails, a screencast video created for the parent class, and the Internet Safety Blog Post from the Internet Tools in the Classroom course. I was tasked with collaborating with a homeroom teacher on the creation of an Internet safety class for parents. In order to facilitate the creation of the class, I extended my blog post to the partnering teacher. In addition to that, a number of other resources were discussed to help parents create safe Internet experiences for their children on their home networks.
The artifacts are indicators of mastery of my abilities to utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community. Multiple collaborative elements like the blog post, peer email correspondence, and the screencast video documenting the content covered in the session are direct proof of my collaborative skills. The knowledge gained from collaborating on the creation of this parent class is directly inline with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required of today’s instructional technology professionals. For these reasons, the attached artifacts are good indicators of my mastery of the communication and collaboration standard.
If I could have done anything different, I would have loved to film the actual parent session. It would’ve been great to document parent’s authentic questions and concerns. These ideas would have been integrated into the screencast to strengthen it for future use. The next time the session occurs, I will try to have it filmed. The assistant principal of Buford Elementary required that participating parents sign in to the class for attendance verification purposes, which was how the impact was assessed. This log sheet was then used to serve as parent involvement documentation, which in turn positively affects Title 1 funding.
