Artifact: Annotated Bibliography
Standard 6.1 Reflection
The Annotated Bibliography was created for the Educational Research course. The purpose of the assignment was to complete an annotated bibliography of the ten best published articles relating to the goals and ideas tied to the capstone proposal idea. The assignment parameters called for at least seven of the ten works to be peer-reviewed research-based articles employing a variety of research methods. Annotations accompanying the ten works called for the analysis and
synthesis of ideas and how those correlated to the framework of the capstone proposal and rationale.
The artifact is a direct indicator of my abilities to apply knowledge and skills to improve personal productivity and professional practice. Out of all of the many assignments that I have worked on throughout my coursework for the ITEC department, this particular assignment is the one, I feel, that I worked on the hardest. I put a lot of hours into finding these articles and then analyzing them. I probably looked at and read thirty to forty different articles before deciding on these ten to help build my case for my capstone problem and rationale. Because of that, I feel that I am now more efficient in analyzing academic literature. Not only that, I also feel I am more adept at searching for and finding academic literature. Between the EBSCOhost databases and Google Scholar, I feel pretty confident in my abilities to quickly navigate those resources to find information. Also evident in my annotated bibliography is evidence of my abilities to find and analyze quickly the methodologies used in academic literature.
Further, finding articles focusing specifically on iPads was an interesting and sometimes difficult task. What I found is the Australasian corner of the world is quite on top of things when it comes to the abundance of academic literature focusing on iPads. At times finding these articles was difficult. For these reasons, I feel the artifact demonstrates my abilities to continually grow in knowledge and skills of current and emerging technologies.
In fact because I found an abundance of great and technologically progressive academic literature coming from Australasia, I feel like it perhaps skewed my work a bit. If I were to revisit this project, I would hope by now that more academic literature is available focusing on iPad integration in stateside schools. That is one thing that I would change to make my work more balanced. While it is good to think globally, there is also value in looking at more similar schools right here in the states.
Overall, the exercise of creating the annotated bibliography taught me a great deal about effectively searching for, analyzing, and synthesizing academic literature which is an essential skill of any educator and certainly an instructional technology coach. The learning was hugely beneficial to my professional development. This artifact positively impacted the validity of my capstone problem and rationale and thus strengthened my capstone project and its goals. Further, its impact can be seen in the implementation of various iPad applications, like Shadow Puppet and Osmo, in the classrooms at Buford Elementary.
