1.4 Diffusion of Innovations & Change
Candidates research, recommend, and implement strategies for initiating and sustaining technology innovations and for managing the change process in schools. (PSC 1.4/ISTE 1d)
Artifact: Action/Evaluation Plan
Standard 1.4 Reflection: One-Year Action/Evaluation Plan
The One-Year Action/Evaluation Plan artifact was created for the Instructional Technology Leadership course. The purpose of the assignment was to research and recommend strategies, goals, success indicators, and devise a timeline to implement more effective uses of technology in the school based on the needs identified in the current reality report. The Action/Evaluation Plan was a key piece of the larger Technology Planning Project. Upon completion of the SWOT Analysis, I was able to analyze the strengths and weaknesses regarding technology use at Buford Elementary and develop a series of goals for the following academic year. The Action/Evaluation plan provides detailed implementation information regarding more effective technology use at Buford Elementary and outlines strategies to attain the technology goals.
The artifact demonstrates my mastery of the Diffusions of Innovation and Change standard. Completion of the Action/Evaluation Plan, allowed me to effectively demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required of an Instructional Technology professional when facilitating and implementing change initiatives. Part of the research involved with developing the Action/Evaluation Plan involved developing a deeper understanding of school funding and tailoring suggestions and strategies to fall within guidelines associated with system, Title 1, and local funds. Additionally, the recommended strategies listed in the plan align with the school culture and are attainable. Much of the work that I have done facilitating technology-based professional learning and serving on the technology and leadership committees for the 2015-2016 school year has directly impacted school improvement. By creating attainable and realistic goals that aligned with the current culture of Buford Elementary, many of the outlined goals and strategies listed in the Action/Evaluation plan are well in process. Particularly, two of the outlined goals regarding increased usage of Google Docs and the Osmo interactive manipulative kits have seen a surge in daily use. While there is still more to do to reach all of the goals outlined in the Action/Evaluation Plan, it is important to remember that effective change processes take time to fully implement.
By completing this artifact, I gained the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed of an Instructional Technology professional to properly assess the effectiveness of school initiatives and research and recommend the strategies, goals, success indicators, and timeline needed to facilitate the change process towards more effective technology uses in the school. In retrospect, when drafting my Action/Evaluation Plan I wouldn’t specifically name the brand of Web 2.0 technology in the strategy. Rather than specifically naming Nearpod or Kahoot!, I would simply refer to them more broadly in the Action/Evaluation Plan as Web 2.0 multi-device quizzing platforms. By doing so, the plan would better allow for the rapid change of new and emerging Web 2.0 solutions.
The work that went into creating the Action/Evaluation Plan directly impacted school improvement. Through targeted professional development sessions centered on implementing Osmo and Google Apps for Education, I was able to positively impact the faculty’s effective usage of these technologies and encourage further interest and application of other technologies. The impact of the faculty’s Osmo and GAFE usage will be assessed in a variety of ways. Through positive teacher feedback and informal teacher observations, impact can already be seen and assessed in the number of regular Google Docs and Osmo users. Additionally, for the 2016-2017 school year the impact of Osmo and GAFE usage will be further assessed by completing an assessment of teachers who have effectively implemented and adopted these two tools. For the following academic year, I am hopeful that my new principal will want to further implement some of the strategies outlined in the Action/Evaluation Plan to continue to drive the change process forward and leverage more effective technology use at Buford Elementary.
