This has, without a doubt, been a very intense course. I have learned a great number of things. One of the most important things that I learned this semester was how to correctly use the filtering tool within Excel. The screencast excel tutorials within task four of this semester were very informative and helpful to me. The second takeaway, for me, was the importance of using protocols to establish safe boundaries of discussion when discussing teaching practice or student work. Finally, the third most important thing that I learned this semester was the importance of “Going Visual”. I had an extraordinarily difficult time during the Data Overview assignment trying to visualize how to correctly set up my spreadsheets to get the desired end visual result. I found that I over-relied on bar graphs because those tend to be the style of graphs that I can comprehend quickly. Creating visuals from raw data is no easy task and this assignment really opened my eyes to how difficult it is to convey deeper ideas with data to the masses. I would have to say that because of the difficulty and the amount of time that I put into the project. The data overview was the most valuable field experience for me. As far as going forward is concerned, I plan on trying to apply some of the protocols to leadership meetings. Also, with the work that I did this semester, I have a comprehensive plan for what a data team might look like at Buford Elementary. Having such a clear outline might make it easier for my administration to begin implementation of some of the items that I created this semester. Finally, as far as challenges for the future, I think finding time to squeeze the Collaborative Inquiry and Using Data Processes into the mix of our school’s already busy calendar will pose as the greatest challenge. I think my administration and faculty will be receptive to the ideas. I just wonder how implementing some of the processes will logistically fit. However, overall I think the knowledge that I have gained this semester about data, protocols, collaborative inquiry and all of the other processes will make me a more effective technology facilitator and leader.
